October 5th - 9th Newsletter

We had another great week last week. We had a blast at The Magic House and we have worked so hard in our math and reading strategies. Next week, we are going to be doing some educational, but fun, activities to learn about bats and pumpkins. I can't wait to make observations on pumpkins. We will also get to meet our 5th grade buddies for the first time!

Congratulations to Ian for winning our award for Initiative for the month of September. Ian rarely needs reminders to get to work and just do his best work EVERY TIME! At the beginning of any lesson, he knows how he is going to accomplish the task and he always does. I don't need to remind him to give his best effort, because it's part of his character. Way to go Ian! You rock and I'm so proud! The character word for the month of October is Problem Solving. Problem solving is the process of working through details of a problem to reach a solution.

Reading/Units of Study: We will be able to ask and answer questions about a text. We will be able to read prose and poetry with proper fluency and expression. We will be able to retell a story by telling the beginning, middle and ending. We will be able to make observations using our five senses.
Writer's Workshop: We will be able to write an interesting hook for an informative writing piece on bats. We will be able to write an opening, interesting facts, and a closing with proper spacing, punctuation, and capitalization. We will be able to revise to make our writing sound better.
Math: We will be able to identify the missing parts of ten. We will be able to use a table to solve problems. We will be able to create and organize a table to solve problems. We will understand the meaning of more than, less than and missing part. We will be able to rock our Topic 3 Math Test!!!!
Phonics: We will be able to read and write words with the ea vowel team. The skill this week is learning about the ea vowel team. This vowel team is tricky because the ea vowel team can either make the long e or short e sound. We have to learn how to use context to decide if the word has the short e or long e. Have fun practicing this week! Here are our words for the week: team, bean, read, head, bread, sweat, heat, meant, dream, deaf, each, cream. Don't forget about using Spelling City to practice our words in a fun way!
