Black History Month
Here is just some of the cooperative work we completed during our couple week studying famous African Americans that helped shape our nation. We made individual posters, as well as group posters. I'll be posting a video later this week of their great thoughts too! The kids really got into it and I could see them speaking passionately about how unfair laws were in our country before people as far back as Harriet Tubman and as recent as Martin Luther King, Jr. helped make changes. In the words of one of our classmates, "If Martin visited our classroom today, I would tell him thank you for changing the world." Also, there are some pictures from our Black Rep assembly. If you look closely, you can see me acting out a folktale as an otter, and you'll see Akeem shaking it on stage as he acted out another folktale. It was awesome!
February 23rd - 27th
We enjoyed our week by learning about government and the important characteristics of being a leader. We enjoyed discussing how teachers and students both have the characteristics needed to be excellent leaders for our country. We also had a great time at an assembly from The Black Rep. The lady that performed for us got us moving, shaking, chanting and singing! It was awesome to see everyone having such a great time!
Reading/Units of Study: We will understand how to determine the different between important and interesting facts about our nation's symbols. We will be able to identify the Liberty Bell, Mount Rushmore, White House, Capital Building, Bald Eagle and American Flag. We will understand the meaning of symbol.
Writer's Workshop: We will know how to write an opinion piece on why we would be a great leader. We will be able to edit and revise to make our writing the best it can be. We will be able to give a 4 for EFFORT!!!!
Math: We will understand how to add and subtract groups of 10, using various strategies. We will understand how to use various strategies, including mental math, using a 100 chart, and regrouping. Here is a great video on regrouping . . . which can be very tricky for 1st graders :) We will also be taking our Topic 10 test and hopefully, beginning Topic 11!
Phonics: We will be able to read and write words with the inflectional suffix ending -ed. We will understand that adding -ed to verbs makes them past tense. We will be able to tell if the word has an -ed that makes the -d, -t, or -ed sound. Our words for the week are: handed, ended, landed, played, failed, filled, mixed, picked, wished, folded, cleaned, reached.

Great Lunches with Great Kiddos!!!!
Last week I got to have lunch with Jonathan, Akeem, Alex, Kylie and Florence because they earned a special lunch in the classroom with their favorite dessert. I loved spending extra time with them and I really enjoyed hearing about everyone's lives outside of school. Listening to the interests of 1st graders is quite entertaining :)

Week of February 17th - 20th
We had a great time this week, especially at our Friendship Party. Thank you to all of the parents that sent in items or volunteered their time to attend our party. Both the kids and I really appreciated everything!!! We have finished learning about the famous black Americans that helped
shape our nation and WOW . . . we really learned a lot of information! We were making connections between people, as well as ourselves. Next week we will start learning about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, as well as the various characteristics that make a great leader.
Reading/Units of Study: We will understand how to determine important facts. We will be able to identify characteristics that make a good leader. We will understand the meaning of president, democracy and contribution.
Writer's Workshop: We will know how to organize an opinion piece on who made the greatest contribution to American history. We will be able to write a quality opinion piece, including taking the time to edit and revise to make our writing the best it could be.
Math: We will understand how to add and subtract groups of 10, using various strategies. We will understand how to use various strategies, including mental math, using a 100 chart, and regrouping. Here is a great video on regrouping . . . which can be very tricky for 1st graders :)

The World According to Humphrey
This month our school will be embarking on a special project, an
all school book club called One School, One Book. Every family has
now received a copy of the same book, The World According to Humphrey, and
is asked to read it at home over the month of February. I am personally
asking you to make the time so your family can participate in this special
activity. Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your
child to be an effective reader. But it is also a fun, worthwhile family
activity. With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a
community of readers at our school. Everyone - students, parents,
teachers, even
administrative staff - will be
participating, and we can all reap the many benefits. In
school, the students will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to
encourage and reward attentiveness and participation. You will want to make
sure your family keeps up so your child can be included. Throughout the
month, everyone will be talking about The World According to Humphrey! One School, One Book is a
novel program because all grade levels will be listening to the same
book. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound
educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material out
loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. I hope that you enjoy reading
with your child as much as I do! Enjoy and below is the reading schedule :)

February 2nd - 6th
This week, we are wrapping up our discussion on Black History by creating posters of who we thoroughly enjoyed learning about. Aside from that, we will continue learning about 2 more very important people in our nation's history . . . George Washington and Abraham Lincoln! Below is a rundown of everything
else that we we will be working on next week.
Reading/Units of Study: We will identify key details and the central message within a text. We will understand how to take notes on important information. We will understand the meaning of the words equality (being equal or treated the same), president (the chief leader of our country) and contribution (the act of giving). We will also be learning about prepositions. Here is a great video on prepositions that I'm sure will bring back some memories for the parents!!!
Writer's Workshop: We will share our personal narratives with our classmates. We will write an opinion piece about which person made the biggest contribution to US history.
Math: We will compare numbers to identify which is greater than and less than using >, <, and =. We will also be able to identify mystery numbers based on riddles. The topic 10 math letter/game will be sent home later this week.
Phonics: We will be able to read and write contractions. The words for the week are: I'm, isn't, can't, don't, it's, let's, she's, he's, that's, and who's. Our test will be on Friday, and as always, head to Spelling City to get some fun practice in! Also, here is a fun video on contractions.
Shining Star: This past week we got to learn all about Caleb's likes and dislikes, and during the week of February 2nd, we will get to learn more about our new Shining Star . . . Isabella! I will be sending stuff home today with our new Shining Star!
