More Outstanding Role Models!

I got a chance to celebrate yesterday with two fabulous ladies who earned 25 Outstanding Role Models in the classroom. That means that almost 25% of the time so far in 1st grade, they have been Outstanding Role Models. We got to enjoy a delicious pizza lunch in the classroom. Way to go Kylie and Florence!!!! I wonder which students will make it to this milestone next . . .

Way to Go!

I want to give a big shout out to the student that received the award for showing Perseverance in our classroom. I chose to give the award to Mia because she exemplifies what it means to persevere. To persevere means to continue trying even when you may face difficult obstacles. Mia was having trouble in math and even when it got hard for her, she pushed through it and has become quite the math rock star. I am so proud of the effort she has put forth of meeting her goal of becoming better at math. Way to go Mia! I'm so proud of you!!!!

Happy 100th Day!

I cannot believe we have already had 100 days of school. Today we worked on 100 math problems and went on a hunt throughout the school finding 100 words. We explored everywhere from the K/1 hallway to the atrium and all the way upstairs. The kids had a blast and it was nice to put some fun outside the classroom into our day! Outstanding Role Models!!!!

I just want to celebrate with some awesome students who have been on OUTSTANDING ROLE MODEL not once, not twice, not even 10 times. They have been on outstanding role model 20 times!!!!! These 3 lovely ladies earned an ice cream sundae party in the classroom with me during lunch. They had a great time with all the toppings they desired! Way to go Jessica, Audrey and Mia!!! You girls rock!

Central always looks forward to our annual Family Reading Night.  This year we are adding a few new attractions. 

·      First, we are adding a Family Math Room.  This room will have math activities and games for students and families to enjoy.

A New Week . . . A New Unit

Next week, we will begin our unit titled, "American Contributions". In this unit, we will read fiction and informational texts and meet various Americans and learn all about how they shaped our nation. We will also discover the American symbols, as well as discover their importance to the United States of America. We will be digging deep in this unit, as we touch on everything from slavery to the constitution and a lot of stuff in between. We will open the week by building our background knowledge on the Underground Railroad and how freedom for everyone began to take shape. On

Ms. Krueger would like me to remind everyone that she still needs flashlights for each student for the performance on May 6th at 6:30 pm. Also, shirt money is due to her by the end of the month.

Report cards were sent home on Friday. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call or email me. If you have not already done so, please sign your report card envelope and send it back to school. The report card is yours to keep :)

January 12th - 16th

This week, we will finish up learning about MyPlate and will begin learning about having good hygiene. Remember, there are a ton of great online videos available on Brainpop, Jr., as well as YouTube that go over good healthy habits. Check out the objectives below to see more of what we are going to be learning about this week!
Reading/Units of Study: We will be able to tell about the importance of each food group by creating a healthy plate. We will know the meaning of our two vocabulary words, hygiene and germ. We will be able to tell different ways to stay clean.
Writer's Workshop: We will understand the important parts we need to include in an opinion piece. We will be able to write an opinion piece on the topic of our choosing.
Phonics/Spelling: We will understand when to use -k or -ck when a word ends with the /k/ sound. The rule states that if the /k/ sound is right after a short vowel, it needs to be -ck. If the /k/ sound is after a consonant or long vowel, you just use a -k. For example, in the word, truck, the /k/ sound is after the short vowel /u/; but, in the word, mask, the /k/ is after a consonant /s/. It's a pretty easy rule if you think about it. Remember, you can head to Spelling City to practice and play games to help improve your spelling.
Math: We will understand how to count numbers in base-ten and we will see numbers as tens and ones. We will be able to identify how many tens and ones in 2-digit numbers. We will be able to break up a whole number into different parts. For example, 45 is 4 tens and 5 ones, but it can also be 3 tens and 15 ones, 2 tens and 25 ones, 1 ten and 35 ones, or 0 tens and 45 ones.

The Pearson Realize math letter went home today, so don't forget to look it over and head to the website for some great learning activities!

December . . . I mean January 5th - 9th

Seriously, where did the time go??? I can't believe we are already halfway through the school year. I hope you all enjoyed your time with your families over our break. I enjoyed visiting Santa and listening to Parker explain that he wanted tools and cookies. There is nothing better than the joy in a kiddos eyes when Christmas morning rolls around and they see that Santa granted their wishes. I loved hearing about the presents and fun times everyone shared with their families. There were some great gifts received and wonderful memories made by everyone! Can you believe it is already 2015?

We are starting off 3rd quarter by learning all about healthy habits. This week, we are learning about healthy food choices and why certain food groups are beneficial to our bodies. You can head to Brainpop, Jr. or MyPlate Kids' Place to learn more about the food groups and the nutrients provided by each.
