Week of February 17th - 20th

We had a great time this week, especially at our Friendship Party. Thank you to all of the parents that sent in items or volunteered their time to attend our party. Both the kids and I really appreciated everything!!! We have finished learning about the famous black Americans that helped shape our nation and WOW . . . we really learned a lot of information! We were making connections between people, as well as ourselves. Next week we will start learning about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, as well as the various characteristics that make a great leader.

Reading/Units of Study: We will understand how to determine important facts. We will be able to identify characteristics that make a good leader. We will understand the meaning of president, democracy and contribution.
Writer's Workshop: We will know how to organize an opinion piece on who made the greatest contribution to American history. We will be able to write a quality opinion piece, including taking the time to edit and revise to make our writing the best it could be.
Math: We will understand how to add and subtract groups of 10, using various strategies. We will understand how to use various strategies, including mental math, using a 100 chart, and regrouping. Here is a great video on regrouping . . . which can be very tricky for 1st graders :)
Phonics: We will be able to read and write words with the inflectional suffix ending -ing. Our words for the week are: seeing, mixing, saying, rushing, blocking, floating, doing, going, waiting, playing, barking, swinging.
